Asia, as the largest continent, spans habitats from tropical rainforests to tundra. GWC focuses primarily on tropical Asia, from India to Indonesia, which contains several global biodiversity hotspots. This region has some of the highest deforestation rates in the world, which bolsters the number of threatened species and habitats. The illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products also threatens many unique plants and animals. However, there are many conservation opportunities in the region, as well as increasing capacity for making positive impacts.

GWC and the Center for Sustainability, a local partner, began working in 2013 to protect more than 100,000 acres of rainforest on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. This site, which is set to be designated Cleopatra’s Needle Forest Reserve, is home to dozens of unique and endangered species on an island that was ranked the fourth most irreplaceable area globally for unique and threatened biodiversity. This habitat also provides the only refuge for the last 200 members of the indigenous Batak tribe.
